The Nakagin Capsule Tower, an iconic example of Metabolism architecture, was demolished in 2022 due to maintenance issues and failure to update capsules, despite being designed for modular replacement. The tower, comprised of individual capsules attached to a central core, suffered from delayed maintenance, low occupancy, and a design flaw hindering capsule removal. While celebrated by artists and designers for its retro-futuristic style, the capsules' small size and lack of amenities contributed to low demand. The discussion highlights Japan's approach to architecture, where buildings are often rebuilt due to earthquake regulations and a cultural emphasis on renewal rather than preservation. This contrasts with Europe, where historical buildings are typically conserved. The concept of capsule architecture, though not widely adopted for residential buildings, finds success in areas like cruise ship construction. Some also draw parallels between the tower and the aesthetic of cyberpunk fiction like *Neuromancer* and *Blade Runner*.
