A Finnish inventor has built a solar-powered explorer yacht that never needs fuel, and he did it entirely by himself in just 200 days.

The 35-foot Helios 11 runs purely on solar power, cruises for hours, and could change how we think about freedom at sea.

It’s the first of its kind, an ultra-light explorer yacht capable of traveling indefinitely, powered only by the sun and its rays.

And it all started in a small shed in Finland.

The secrets of a solar-powered explorer yacht

Meet the Helios 11, a handmade, 35-foot prototype solar-powered explorer superyacht built in six months using off-the-shelf solar panels and lightweight materials.

It runs on a little electric motor and can cruise at 7 knots in sunlight, hitting a top speed of 8.5 knots – even in Finland’s dark fall, it manages to cruise, using less electricity than a household blender.

There’s no use for petrol on board – instead, the yacht relies completely on solar energy, with backup sails for stability and propulsion.

Inside, everything is designed for efficiency over luxury, with plywood controls, compact fittings, and minimal weight.

Despite its simple finish, it still looks cosy, and the system works remarkably well.

The ship that can run forever

After testing Helios 11, the builder is already planning the next version, the Helios 15.

At 15 meters, it will be faster, lighter, and fitted with custom lightweight solar panels because the goal is an autonomous yacht with unlimited range, capable of running everything from Starlink internet to a sauna.

The engineer believes this marks the future of true freedom, a life free from fuel stops, marinas, and the costs of conventional yachts.

“You don’t need millions to live freely,” he says. “You just need sunlight and determination.”
